FilmAid for Refugee Camps in Tanzania

Church World Service seeks funds for a FilmAid program to promote health, strengthen capacity, and enrich the lives of vulnerable, displaced people in Tanzania.

Need: Tanzania currently hosts 516,000 refugees – the largest number of refugees and asylum seekers in Africa. These men, women, and children often face shortages of food, water, and medicine, as well as educational opportunities – unmet needs that often obscure the trauma, isolation, and despair felt by many long-term camp habitants.

Target Population: Refugees and displaced people living in Kibondo Town, Mtendeli, Nduta, and Karago refugee camps in Tanzania, as well as the local population in the area.

Partnership & Collaboration: Church World Service is partnering with FilmAid International, a humanitarian aid organization that utilizes the power of film to promote education and a sense of community among the world’s vulnerable and displaced.

Project Activities:

In Western Tanzania, FilmAid International goes to camps to screen educational and entertainment films that focus on subject matter central to the lives of the displaced. Through this project, Church World Service will continue to:

  • Educate through screenings related to health, HIV/AIDS, sexual and gender-based violence, gender equality, and human rights through film screenings and discussions.
  • Reduce sense of physical and mental isolation among refugees living in the camps by screening global films that entertain and promote cultural understanding.
  • Enhance the capacity of refugees through skills training and peer learning.

  • Screen educational films for post-primary children in neighboring towns.

Outcomes:

  • Beneficiaries will attain global awareness of issues critical to the refugee experience, alleviating feelings of physical and mental isolation.
  • Refugees will strengthen livelihood capacities through education and job skills training.

  • FilmAid screenings will enhance education in schools.

Funding Opportunities:

  • Salary for Kibondo Interpreter $1,728
  • Film, video, and program supplies $4,500
  • Truck/vehicle rental for mobile screenings $12,800

Total Program Budget: $150,037
