"Akwaaba!" Church World Service Executive Director Rev. John L. McCullough used this traditional Ghanaian greeting - meaning "Welcome" in the Twi language - to open his Nov. 18, 2005, meeting with staff of the CWS-administered Overseas Processing Entity in Accra, Ghana.
McCullough and Moses Ole Sakuda, CWS Associate Director for Mission Relationships and Witness, were in Accra for the launch of the new Eminent Persons Ecumenical Program for Peace in Africa (EPEPPA), an international partnership of religious leaders including McCullough and the general secretaries of the World Council of Churches and All Africa Conference of Churches. The EPEPPA will use respected Africans to help resolve active conflicts and build peace on the African continent.
"We couldn't come so close to the OPE and not pay a visit to this important part of the Church World Service family," McCullough said. OPE staff gave their guests a tour of the offices and sat together for a dialogue that touched on the recent Pakistan earthquake, the HIV/AIDS pandemic, and more.
McCullough offered a brief history of CWS, emphasizing its 60-year commitment to working collaboratively with partners around the world to respond to emergencies, promote social and economic development, assist refugees, advocate for justice, and build peace. He said the CWS logo – a figure with arms outstretched in a welcoming gesture – symbolizes CWS's commitment to assisting the world’s most vulnerable people.
